What is happiness? Is happiness only all the positive experiences? Does being happy mean feeling like on top of the world? Is it a momentary sensation we experience or a continuous state we can ever achieve?
Or perhaps to be happy means to be able to deal with things as they occur calmly and reflectively; to face challenges with the same curiosity or enthusiasm, even, that we feel while undertaking opportunities, and see all as chances to grow and learn? In my experience it is the latter.
I came to appreciate that the world is balanced naturally. The good cannot exist without the bad, darkness without the light, pleasure without pain and so I too must learn to appreciate the challenging moments as opportunities for me to come out on the other side. And while I face the challenges - enjoy the ride (the challenge) and learn.
I have also come to realise that only in situations when I refuse to work through a challenging situation, when I refuse to see the challenge as a chance to grow and a ticket for me to get on the other side, only then am I stuck, don’t move forward, don’t grow and don’t achieve the next level whatever it is….For everyone it’s different.
There is a lot of horrible stuff happening in the world today. And whilst in many of those situations it is unimaginable to see positives in the negative that people are experiencing, in our every day lives, when challenged, we could ask ourselves more often than we do: What am I learning here? What is the opportunity in this situation for me?… Rather than why is this happening to me.
No point in working through challenges for the sake of it. All of it is only relevant if we know what we are trying to achieve. A situation brings an opportunity only if it brings us closer to achieving a goal. By undertaking an opportunity or facing a challenge we get to become the person who can achieve what we want. And that makes it all worthwhile.
Beyond all, the purpose of seeing the world as many shades of grey, rather than black or white, is to appreciate what we have. It will not always be good, the euphoric moments will not last forever. It will, also, not always be bad and at those times, we need to remind ourselves of the good times and remember that it will pass… it all passes as it is all an experience. The ability to embrace it ALL is the ability to live a balanced life.
Would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, challenges or opportunities… And remember there is always another way to look at things.
